Forms to spaces: Dhyanam S. Newaskar

This exercise introduces two basic ideas of design to the foundation-level students of architecture. The first one is the composition of basic geometric forms to create spaces. It can broadly be considered as an additive method where distinct elements plug into each other to create spaces. The second is the subtractive method, in which students carve the forms to create spaces. They also carefully draw the shadows cast by these elements as a tool to see depth in the spaces.

Later, they draw activities within the composition, assuming it to be either a village, a city, an institute or any other public space of their choice.
