Scaling the tower: Relooking at the typology of a high rise comes out of a design studio as a part of semester 07. This section cutting across a high rise hospitality project, situated in Mangalore, demonstrates the quality of spaces in the project. The mass of the tower reduces as it steps up, creating a heavier mass at the lower level, relating to surrounding context; and a leaner mass at higher levels, so the overall form is light. Circulation is designed around common atriums that are restricted to certain heights, creating separate blocks at seperate levels. These correspond to the reduction in mass, leading to terraces which are occupied by common amenities for the guests. Some room blocks are removed at various levels to allow natural light and ventilation into the atriums and provide relief to those looking outside and in.
