At the heart of Padarayanapura lies a rare urban pause; an open precinct that absorbs movement, gathers people, and quietly anchors everyday life. The proposal builds upon this existing condition, strengthening connections while allowing the place to remain recognisably itself (notions of place keeping). The underlying score of the proposal: Community + Commerce; Mobility + Movement; Plaza + Play.
Addressing the main concerns at the site, viz., chaotic movement, urban residue, and blurred boundaries. The bus stand, a vital connector to surrounding neighbourhoods and commercial centres, is reorganised to function with clarity and ease. A dedicated bus lane along the eastern edge accommodates multiple buses while freeing the inner roads from congestion. Vehicular access is redirected to the western edge, separating heavy transit from local movement. Auto stands, cycle services, parking, and carefully placed pedestrian crossings stitch together Goripalya, Padarayanapura, and the BBMP park, ensuring safe and intuitive movement.
This restructured network releases a large, continuous plaza- an unbounded public ground shaped by the site’s natural slope. Retained trees and high-mast lights lend continuity, while modulated plinths create spaces for play, pause, and gathering. The higher plinth extends the school foreground into a secure play area; the lower levels welcome hawkers, the Indira Canteen, and the Nandini booth.
Edges are activated with transit facilities, shops, and an amphitheatre that slips into the plaza, hosting both everyday waiting and collective celebration. Vendors, institutions, and public services spill into the open, while buffers ensure safety and comfort. The plaza becomes both container and catalyst—holding transit, commerce, culture, and the quiet rituals of daily life.
