What makes a HOUSE a HOME? – A mapping exercise: Sitara Rao

This illustration was made as a part of a mapping exercise in the pre-design phase of the housing studio.

It was a time when the COVID pandemic had moved our lives into our homes making them the new hotspot of all activity – work, leisure and family. The spatial requirement and dynamics of a house became more nuanced. Spaces were used in more ways than what it was designed for.

This illustration was made to map my family’s lifestyle in our home – what made this house a home. It helped to understand the sensitivity required in designing a house – the role every ledge, corridor, room, etc plays in shaping the activities/spatial usage around them. It also helped to understand orientation and climatic responses.

A combination of symbols, water colours, alcohol pens and small notes made it best to capture the intent on an A5 sketchbook.
