The inquiry began by exploring the role of architecture in shaping spaces for martial arts training. It examined various traditional martial arts and the relationship between the ground plane on which they are practiced. The traditional martial art of Kalaripayattu is performed in subterranean structures known as Kalaris. The aim of the project was to explore the relationship between the ground as a datum in architecture by proposing a program that celebrates the continuity of the art form within the historic site of Ezharakandam. The primary objective was to introduce an institutional quality to this traditional martial art while reinterpreting the role of the ground through principles derived from the traditional subterranean Kalari.
