Parda – Exploded Isometry : Hemamshu S

The thesis proposes a Rehabilitation centre in Mumbai for retired sex workers, bringing together residential accommodation, healthcare, skill development, administrative facilities, and shared spaces for community life.

To have lived in a red-light area is to have lived under a relentless, unfiltered, and often unrequited gaze and gape. The building’s facade is conceived as a parda – a veil that seeks to reclaim the agency of the gaze for its inhabitants.

It is a tongue-in-cheek response to a society that insists on veiling its women. Here, it is the building, rather than the women, that is given a parda.

In this drawing, the red parda drapes over the built mass, transforming its form and function as it moves through the proposed architecture program. It unfolds into jaali screens, balconies, courtyards, and framed openings.

Through thoughtfully designed frames and windows, the architecture creates a dialogue between looking and being seen. The ability to observe the outside world without the vulnerability of being observed in return becomes an act of empowerment offering privacy, dignity, and control to those who have long been denied them.
