Khilla Plan | RSP Kavalur

The plan illustrates the spatial organisation of The Khilla, meaning “Fort,” the ancestral residence of the village headman of Kawaloor in Koppal District, Northern Karnataka. The house has been occupied by the same family for over thirty generations. The complex is entered from the east through a prominent gateway that opens into a central courtyard. Facing the cardinal east is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, understood to be the oldest structure within the complex, around which the rest of the built form gradually developed.

The central courtyard acts as the core of the house, leading to the temple and the two residential blocks, of which the northern house is currently dilapidated. The northern and southern edges of the courtyard are defined by verandahs, while three bedrooms are located at its corners, opening onto these verandahs.

The southern verandah leads to the main entrance, which opens into the living area. A linear axis is established between the main entrance and the entrance to the private living-cum-dining area. This space contains a small courtyard that is currently covered with a translucent corrugated sheet. The dining room opens to the kitchen on the east and the bathrooms on the west.

The kitchen further opens into a garden and cowshed to the east, while the path along the bathrooms leads to a garden space containing two toilets, along with designated areas for washing and drying clothes.

The entire residence measures approximately 65 m by 30 m and is largely single-storeyed, except for the formal living area, which is expressed as a double-height space. This living room functions as the formal reception area where the headman receives guests.
